Shadowboxing for the week!
The magic word again… Shadowboxing! We wonder what the deal with it… in classes; we anyway do the same thing. So what is the point of repeating the same thing? And this whole deal of an imaginary opponent and then hitting the guy can be quite confusing in the beginning…
To quote someone who has had immense patience and ‘focus’ with me “the way you train is the way you spar!” Point to be noted, it makes sense doesn’t it, I mean let us face it, the punches and kicks definitely can be much better! (And faster!)
The idea is to try varying combinations of kicks and punches; this gives you innovative ideas and also helps you not to get stuck in with one technique. Once you learn to adapt and innovate in any situation, sparring and the rest become easier!
Says Arwin (E.T.), “with shadowboxing, you learn to use your complete body, and 100% force.” While shadowboxing, it is necessary that you visualise the opponent and determine where the pressure points are. At the beginning try only aiming, and getting the points right, with time increase the speed and accuracy.
Not only, will you become a good fighter, shadowboxing is one of the best ways to lose weight and burn fat! It is complete body workout. “3 minutes of continues shadowboxing is a very good workout regime. It builds your muscles and stamina as well.” Says Arwin.
“I start with Chi-gung and go in for 3 minutes of continuous shadowboxing, with non-stop kicks and punches. The best way is to visualise 3 opponents and work on their pressure points. The best thing about shadowboxing is it can be done anytime of the day. It can also be done with just imagination. Imagine an opponent and imagine hitting the guy!” Says Arwin… (Wow! Talk about innovation).
Arwin adds further, “In a real fight you need to use your mind as well, as each situation is different, shadowboxing makes each move and technique a part of you. It becomes a part of your unconscious mind, which is where a fighter gets his or her confidence.”
